Introduction: The Return of Hands-On Hobbies

As technology and digital entertainment become part of everyday life, more adults are exploring hobbies that offer creativity, focus, and tangible results.

From woodworking and miniature crafting to mechanical model building, hands-on activities provide an enjoyable alternative to screen-based entertainment.

According to Circana, US building-set sales increased by 22% in the first half of 2026, while toy sales to adults aged 18 and older grew by 25%. Michaels also reported a 136% increase in searches for analog hobbies over six months.

Although these figures do not specifically measure metal model kit demand, they highlight growing interest in related creative activities. Here are seven hobby trends worth watching in 2027.

1. Screen-Free Creativity Is Gaining Attention

After spending hours on computers and smartphones, many adults appreciate activities involving physical materials and visible progress.

Building a mechanical model requires attention, patience, and hands-on problem-solving. Each completed section brings a sense of accomplishment.

Michaels' 2026 Creativity Trend Report highlighted interest in analog activities such as painting, knitting, and journaling.

In 2027, screen-free hobbies may continue appealing to adults seeking more engaging ways to spend their free time.

2. Adult Model Building Continues to Expand

Building sets and model kits are no longer exclusively associated with children. Adults enjoy assembling detailed models, collecting unique designs, and displaying completed creations.

Circana reported that US building-set sales grew by 22% during the first half of 2026, alongside 20% growth in arts and crafts.

For enthusiasts interested in engineering, vehicles, science fiction, and mechanical design, model building offers creative challenges and collectible results.

Adult-oriented building kits could remain attractive in 2027, particularly those combining quality materials with satisfying assembly experiences.

3. Mechanical Designs Offer a Unique Creative Experience

Mechanical models combine artistic design with engineering-inspired structures. Exposed gears, articulated joints, layered metal panels, and intricate frames create futuristic and industrial appearances.

Unlike ordinary decorative objects, 3D metal model kits allow hobbyists to participate in creating the finished design.

At Tablefunny, our collection features mechanical robots, futuristic vehicles, and metal creatures designed for adults who appreciate detailed construction.

These models may appeal to both builders and collectors interested in mechanical aesthetics.

4. Experienced Builders Seek More Challenging Projects

For experienced hobbyists, complexity can be part of the enjoyment. Advanced model kits require careful assembly, precise component placement, and sometimes multiple building sessions.

The satisfaction comes from transforming individual components into a complete mechanical structure.

A successful building experience also depends on clear instructions, well-designed components, and suitable tools.

In 2027, challenging model kits may remain popular among experienced builders, while beginner-friendly options help newcomers discover the hobby.

5. Completed Models Become Collectible Display Pieces

For many hobbyists, enjoyment continues after assembly. Completed models become desk decorations, shelf displays, or additions to personal collections.

Pinterest's 2026 Hobbies Trend Report highlighted growing search interest in creative collections and display arrangements.

Mechanical robots, detailed vehicles, and futuristic creatures combine visual appeal with the satisfaction of personal craftsmanship.

Finished model appearance may become an increasingly important consideration for adult collectors.

6. Social Media Helps People Discover Model Building

Social media introduces hands-on hobbies to new audiences. Assembly videos, mechanical close-ups, and time-lapse builds reveal how metal components become complete models.

YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest allow hobbyists to share projects, exchange ideas, and discover designs.

Pinterest's 2026 hobby research also reported increased search interest in plastic car model kits, suggesting online discovery opportunities for related building hobbies.

Authentic assembly content can inspire new builders and help customers understand model complexity before purchasing.

7. Model Kits Make Creative Gifts for Adults

A mechanical model kit offers more than a finished product. It provides a hands-on experience for adults interested in engineering, robotics, science fiction, or collectibles.

Michaels' 2026 research highlighted interest in more personal and meaningful gifting experiences.

Whether for birthdays, Christmas, or special occasions, model kits offer creativity, challenge, and lasting display value. Choosing the appropriate difficulty level helps ensure an enjoyable experience.

What These Trends Mean for 2027

Creativity. Personal involvement. Tangible results.

Hands-on activities allow adults to develop skills, explore interests, and create objects they can proudly display.

3D metal model kits bring these elements together through detailed mechanical designs and engaging assembly experiences.

While future market growth remains uncertain, 2026 industry research suggests continued interest in related building, crafting, and collecting activities.
